Discover Lago del Salto

A Championship Venue with a Remarkable Story

Created through engineering and transformed by sport, Lago del Salto is one of central Italy's most memorable waterside destinations.

The Heart of Italy

Rieti is traditionally known as Umbilicus Italiae—the “Navel of Italy”—with Piazza San Rufo celebrated as the geographical centre of the Italian peninsula.

Lazio's Largest Artificial Lake

Lago del Salto was created after completion of the Salto Dam in 1940, transforming the valley into the region's largest man-made lake.

Powered by Water

The reservoir was developed primarily for hydroelectric generation, turning the energy of the Salto river system into renewable electricity.

Up to 87 Metres Deep

At its deepest point, the lake reaches approximately 87 metres, hidden beneath the calm surface seen from the championship venue.

Villages Relocated

Communities within the original valley were moved to higher ground before the reservoir filled, preserving a powerful link with the landscape's past.

Home of Champions

Today the lake has become an international wakeboarding destination and the stage for the 2026 IWWF World Wakeboard Championships.

Why Lago del Salto?

Made for World-Class Wakeboarding

Sheltered Mountain Setting

The surrounding landscape offers a naturally protected environment and a dramatic competition backdrop.

Freshwater Conditions

The reservoir provides an expansive freshwater setting for wakeboarding and recreational boating.

Long Open Reaches

The lake's shape provides the space required for high-level riding, event operations and championship production.

An Unforgettable Stage

Forested shorelines, mountain villages and open water create a uniquely Italian World Championship setting.
